About the International Centre for Health and Human Rights
The International Centre for Health and Human Rights (ICHHR) is a UK registered charity led by Dr. Nimisha Patel, a consultant clinical psychologist in the National Health Service and professor of clinical psychology at the University of East London. She is one of the UK’s and the world’s foremost authorities on the provision of psychological health services for victims of torture and minority ethnic people, including refugees. She specialises in training health professionals in the UK and internationally to provide psychological and other mental health services for these groups.
The ICHHR will supervise and guide research in the UK into experience of psychic reparation and other psychological support for victims of state violence in the UK and internationally. |

Research will be conducted by Silvia Carone Wheatley, a qualified psychologist and psychotherapist, currently studying for a master’s degree at the Tavistock and Portman Foundation Trust in London. Under the guidance of the ICHHR, she will conduct bibliographic research into clinical experiences in the field of psychic reparation; interview professionals involved directly in the field in the UK and internationally, such as in centres that offer psychological support for refugees and victims of torture and other human rights violations; collate her findings into presentations to be delivered at the programme’s seminars, workshops, supervisions and other activities in Brazil; prepare detailed reports on such presentations and the associated exchange of experiences in Brazil; and share these reports with the ICHHR as a contribution to its work in the field in the UK.
Professor Patel will travel to Brazil during the final module of the course to take part in seminars and workshops and will write an article for the programme’s final publication.
The ICHHR is currently developing a clinical model for the psychological treatment of the victims of serious human rights violations, which will be of great relevance to the work of the programme and will be shared with the programme’s participants, giving them access to pioneering work in this field targeted specifically at the final beneficiaries of their training. It recently published a 165-page handbook, Monitoring and Evaluation of Rehabilitation Services for Torture Survivors, which will itself be a valuable resource for the programme.
